DC/Delaware/Baltimore Poker Room Tour

During commute to DC and Baltimore, hero stopped by many poker rooms.

1. At Horseshoe Baltimore, hero was able to play a pink chip ($7.50/$15.00) HOE game.
Hero chopped a decent sized pot on AQ6J5 MW pot, but lost some back in stud8.

2. At Maryland Live!, Hero got wait listed to play in the 2-2 PLO game, but was unable to get on to the game.

3. Hero unfortunately did not pass by Charles Town Races with their large 50 table poker room (1 hour west of DC).

11-28-2014 -- 11-30-2014 - 2-5 PLO and PLO8 cash game notes

2/5 PLO & 2/5 PLO8 @ Harrah's Cherokee.

Overall impressions:
There were live poker games in the poker room. Additionally, there were also electronic poker tables which had 1 1-2 PLO8 game running on Friday.
It was great to see 1-2 live 2-5 PLO8 games and 2-3 live 2-5 PLO games. These games were held in the convention center (when there was space after enough tournament tables busted).

--------
Friday:
Hero played some PLO8 while waiting for PLO.
One player facing raise and reraise folded - aq32 a2 ss to reraise. Lol.

Hero's likely hand: Ah 2h 4s 6h
Hero quartered person for stack with wheel/6 high straight on 3 flush board. Villain check/called hero's bets in 3 way pot, then donked 1/3 pot on low river.
Likely Board:
4c 3c Js 5s 7c

--------
Saturday:

Nothing really interesting of note. Hero played some 2-5 PLO cash.

--------
Sunday:
Hero was going to table switch to another 2-5 PLO game (b/c hero's current game was bad), but person said I'll buy the seat from you. Name your price.
Person was middle aged person and table was deep (600 BBs) w/ hero in position.

What price would you ask?

Hero said quarter and person compiled.

Hero eventually found out that person was 7 stars (Total Rewards status) and maybe hero could have asked/received $50-100.

The Saturday games were not really soft and perhaps hero should have switched to the game (where hero could have switched initially) when seat opened up as players were drinking and somewhat gambling a bit on the side of table I would have sat on (with hero IP).

365 PLO MTT at Harrah's Cherokee

2 old guy with glasses
3 young guy w/ orange bearcats cap
4 young guy
guy who busted quickly, new entry - young male with glasses
6 old guy with glasses
7 young/middle aged female

---------------
Hero late registered around level 2.
Hero played tight and noticed Vil3 was pretty loose.

---------------
Level 2 - Blinds: 50/100

Hero dealt in BB: Ad Ac 5d 4c
Stacks are about 10k deep.

Preflop:
Vil2 (UTG): limps
Vil3: raises to 300
Vil7: calls
Hero: calls
Vil2: calls

(4 players - 1200 in pot)
Flop: Qx 4h Kh
Hero: checks
Vil2: checks
Vil3: bets 800
other players fold.

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero could try to raise here with very premium aces, but there's a couple problems:
1. Unless many people call, hero won't be able to get enough of stack in preflop to auto bet the flop properly.
2. Hero can play it more deceptively and outplay people post flop.
3. Hero's OOP.
Flop: Hero standard c/f is ok with naked overpair.

---------------
Level 3 - Blinds: 75/150

Hero dealt in BB: Ad Ax 6d 3y

Hero called raise preflop and

Flop: 7s 6c 4d
Hero folds to bet.

---------------
Level 4 - Blinds: 100/200

Hero dealt in BB: 9c 8s 7c 4s

Preflop:
3 players limp
Hero: limps
SB: folds
BB: checks

(5 players - 1100 in pot)
Flop: Th 9d 6c

Turn: Th 9d 6c 7d
Vil1: checks
Vil2: checks
Vil3: checks
Vil5: bets 500
Hero: calls
Vil1: check/raises pot
(all players fold)

Analysis:
Preflop: There is some merit in potting preflop and trying to get shorter handed. Hero decides to keep pot smaller.
Flop: Hero decides to keep pot small b/c most turn cards give higher straight. It's probably not best play IP though.
Turn: This was weak-tight to fold with some 2p->boat out redraw and some bluff outs (diamonds).

---------------
Hero dealt UTG: Qx Tx 9d 8d

Preflop:
Hero: raises to 400
Vil6: calls
Vil8 (BB): calls

(3 players - 1300 in pot)
Flop: Kd 6x 3d
Vil8: checks
Hero: bets 900
Vil6: folds
Vil8: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: standard raise although there are gaps on top.
Flop: Hero bet/folds as a cbet on a dry board with few draws (other than flush draw).

---------------
New Player 5 - small, middle aged male with ATL cap

---------------
Hero dealt in SB: Tx Td 9d 8x

Hero has about 10k and is covered by all opponents.

Preflop:
Vil3: limps
Vil8: limps
Hero (SB): calls
Vil1 (BB): checks

(4 players - 1200 in pot)
Flop: Th 7h 3d (hero has bdfd)

Vil1: checks
Vil3: bets 500
Vil8: calls
Hero: raises to 2200

Vil2: folds
Vil3: calls

(3 players - 7800 in pot)
Turn: Tc 7h 3d Js
Hero: bets 7000 (AI)
Vil1: folds
Vil3: thinks for a while, then folds.

Analysis:
Preflop: The table did not seem overly aggressive, so a call seems warranted.
Flop: Hero decides to start getting value and setup a turn AI play.
Turn: Hero gets a non-flush completing turn card and hopes villain might call with sets. Unfortunately, both players fold.

---------------
Hero's stack at level 5: 14050 @ 150/300

---------------
Hero dealt in HJ: Qs Qc Js 7x

Preflop:
2 players limp
Hero: limps
Vil2 (SB): calls
Vil3 (BB): checks

(5 players - 1500 in pot)
Flop: Jh Th 7c
(all players check)

(5 players - 1500 in pot)
Turn: Jh Th 7c 8c
Vil?: bets ?
Hero: calls

(2 players - ~2500-3000? in pot)
River: Jh Th 7c 8c 9x
(both players check)

Hero wins with straight.
Villain mucks.

Analysis:
Preflop: This is ok in LP assuming stacks are deep for set mining purposes.
Flop: Hero doesn't really have hand.
Turn: Hero floats with some bluff outs and has some value against bluffs.
River: Hero has a decent straight and would rather let villain bluff with worse hands.

---------------
Hero dealt in BB: Qx 8s 7s 5x

Preflop:
Vil1: calls
Vil5: calls
Vil8 (SB): calls
Hero (BB): checks

(4 players - 1200 in pot)
Flop: Qx 3x Js 4s 6s
Hero bet 600
Vil1: calls
Vil5: folds
Vil8: folds

(2 players - 2400 in pot)
Turn: Qx 3x Js 4s 6s
Hero: bets 1500
Vil1: calls

(2 players - 5400 in pot
River: Qx 3x Js 4s 6s
Hero: bets 3000
Vil1: folds

Analysis:
Flop: This is a bet to try to take pot down since hand does not likely have a lot of equity by showdown.
Turn: Hero continues semi bluff.
River: This sometimes feels like spot to check/call a bluff. But, this may be incorrect logic.
Since villain called multiple bets, it's more weighted towards 2p/sets than back door flush draws.
The bet does not seem to really get worse hands to call...
Hero's bet is probably a spew.

---------------
Level 7 - Blinds: 250/500
Hero dealt in UTG+1: Ad Jd 9s 6s

Preflop:
(folds to hero)
Hero: raises to 1100
Vil3 (loose player): calls

(2 players - 2950 in pot)
Flop: Ah 7h 2x
Hero bets 1600
Vil3: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a little loose, but hero decides to exploit hero's tighter table image.
Flop: Since hero raised preflop, hero's range usually crushes Axx boards. Hero likely bet/folds though b/c villain is raising sets in this spot.

---------------
Level 7 - Blinds: 250/500
(next hand)
Hero limps in UTG: Ad Ax 4c 3c
(other players limp)

(4-5 players - 2000-2500 in pot)

Flop: Td 9d 8x
Hero folds to bet

---------------
(1 rotation later)
Hero dealt in UTG: Kx Kh Th 6c

Reads: Vil8 was somewhat loose.

Preflop:
Hero (UTG): raises to 1100
Vil8 (BB): calls

(2 players - 2450 in pot)
Flop: 9d 8d 3c
both players check

(2 players - 2450 in pot)
Turn: 9d 8d 3c As
Vil8: checks
Hero: bets 1500
Vil8: calls

(2 players - 5450 in pot)
River: 9d 8d 3c As 5h
both players check

Vil8: shows A755 (Axxx suited) and wins pot.

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a bit of a loose preflop raise with a mediocre KKxx hand.
Flop: Hero probably should have bet/folded flop. Hero tried to pot control because hero does not have strong hand.
In reality, this is a bad spot to play a turn b/c so many turn cards are bad. When hero is IP in HU pot, hero should bet to get villains to fold air.
Turn: Hero decides to start betting as a bluff. Sigh.
River: Hero is likely beaten and will probably not get villain to fold Axxx.

---------------
Level 8 - Blinds: 300/600

Hero dealt in HJ: Ad Qx Td Th

Preflop:
(folds to hero)
Hero: raises to 1300
Vil3 (BB): calls

(2 players - 2600 in pot)
Flop: Jh 2h Jx

Hero: bets 1900
Vil3: thinks for a while, then folds.

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a fairly strong hand (3 broadways w/ suited ace) in late position. Easy steal hand.
Flop: This is a bet that needs to happen. Villain will likely only continue with Jx and some AAxx hands.

---------------
Table change. 20 min left in level 8. 12450 300 600 PLO.

---------------
Second Table Reads:

1 African American male with Atlanta Braves cap
2 middle aged guy

4 guy with suit and glasses
hero

7 middle aged guy
8 old guy with cap and sunglasses on rim of cap
9 old guy with hoodie

---------------
Hero dealt in HJ: As Js 8d 3d

For this hand, seats 7 and 9 were empty.

Preflop:
(folds to hero in HJ)
Hero (UTG+2): raises to 1300
Vil6 (UTG+3): calls
Vil8 (HJ): folds
Vil2 (But): calls
Vil4 (BB): calls

(4 players - 5200 in pot)
Flop: 9x 6x 3c

(4 players - 5200 in pot)
Turn: 9x 6x 3c Qc

(4 players - 5200 in pot)
River: 9x 6x 3c Qc Kx
Hero: bets 2200
other players fold

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a bit loose to raise preflop.
Flop: Hero has no hand and little fold equity.
Turn: Same as flop.
River: This completes OESD and hero decides to bluff at pot.

Hero discovers that players are pretty weak tight especially since hero raised.

---------------
Hero dealt in BB: Xx Xx Xx Xx

Preflop:
2 players limp.

(3 players total - 2100 in pot)
Flop: 7x 3x 2x (rainbow)
Hero: bets 1000
other players fold

Analysis:
Flop: Hero discovers players are playing somewhat weak tight. Since hero's range is super wide as BB, hero will likely get more credibility. Also, players may not fight for limped pots as much.

--------
Table Reads:
Additionally, players are still open limping for the most part.

--------
Hero got no action (all players folded to hero's preflop raise) with Kc Jd Tc 9d.

--------
Level 9 - Blinds: 400/800

Hero dealt on button: 9c 8c 6c 4h

Preflop:
(folds to hero on button)
Hero: raises to 1700
Vil6: reraises pot to 5700
Hero: calls

(2 players - 12000 in pot)
Flop: Jx Jc 2d
Vil6: bets pot (12000)
Hero: tanks/folds

Vil6: says he had AAJx

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero made right play to call, but it is close since hero's calling for 1/3 of stack and flipping when flopping any pair. Villain's range is heavily weighted towards AAxx.
Flop: Horrible flop = fold...

--------
Level 10 - Blinds: 500/1000
Twitter: made horrible float on kqt6 rainbow then 2 flush turn with pair and third nut flush draw after flop check. 7300 500 1000

Hero likely was in BB and dealt KQT6 rainbow.
Flop was likely checked around and so hero decided to float on a draw heavy 2-flush board. River likely completed no draws and hero folded to 2nd bet.
Unfortunately, hero doesn't remember exact hand history context.

--------
Hero's stack: 7000

Level 10 - Blinds: 500/1000
Hero dealt in UTG+3: Qc Jd Tc 7d

Preflop:
(folds to hero)
Hero: raises to 2300
Vil1 (BB, 25k): called

(2 players - 5100 in pot)
Flop: Tx 3c 2c
Vil1: checks
Hero: bets all in
Vil1: calls

Vil1: shows Ac Xc 4x 5x

Board: Tx 3c 2c 9c 4s

Analysis:
Preflop: Pretty standard open when folded to hero.
Flop: With 1 PSB left and pair + side overcards, this is a bet/call.
Villain's hand is not great to see for hero.

---------------
Summary:
Hero out around 49th at level 12.

There were a large number of limped pots even at late stages of MTT. It was unusual, even for a PLO/PLO8 MTT.
Hero also realized and fixed a leak: hero was not trying to steal a lot of limped pots and/or fighting for pots. Hero stole 3+ pots that helped preserve stack above 20BBs for a while.

365 NLHE MTT with Re-Entry at Harrah's Cherokee

10000 starting stack with 25/50 blinds and 30 min. levels

First Table Reads:

---------------
Hero showed up about 30 minutes late due to not feeling well and delays in finding lodging location and casino.
Hero late registered, but stood in line about 30 deep just for first bullet. At registration, hero was told that Total Rewards card was required, which hero misplaced. So, after about 10 minutes of going back down to Total Rewards desk to reprint a card, hero was able to go to "cut line" and finally register.

---------------
Level 3 - Blinds: 100/200

First hand after sitting down. Hero has no player reads.

Hero dealt in HJ: TT

Preflop:
Vil3: raises to 600
Vil6: calls
Vil7: raises to 2500
Vil3: thinks for a while, then folds
Vil6: raises AI to 8775
Hero: thinks for a while, then calls.

Vil6: shows AK

Board: Villain spikes A? on flop (hero doesn't remember)

Hero eventually hears that player 6 is a circuit regular.

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero's raise IP was a bit too large. It could have easily been 1800-2000 (slightly less than pot since IP).
Villain's play was a really weird play. It's rarely AA-KK...but hero could be wrong.

Hero's stack: 1225

4 middle aged lady
young male
6 old guy - not paying attention

Vil1: calls

(3 players - ~2050 in pot)
River: Js Jc 8c Qs 4d
Hero: bets 1200
Vil1: folds

Analysis:
Flop: With so many players, hero decides to slow play. Betting can work too in a
Turn: Hero decides to start building a pot and get value from Qx and/or trying to price out draws.
River: It could be a good metagame play to check the blank river. It might have been better, but hero decides to bet and hope to get value from Qx.

---------------
Additionally, hero lost some chips when flat calling raise in MW pot with a low pocket pair.

---------------
Hero's stack at first break:
11425 at 200/400/50.

---------------
Hero dealt in ?: 66

Hero: raises to 900
Vil10 (8.1k): raises to 2100
Hero: folds

Preflop: This seems standard since villain looked straightforward. There are not enough chips behind to make flat calling a 3b profitable.

---------------
Level 7 - Blinds/Antes: 200/400/50
Hero dealt in BB: KK

Preflop:

Turn: Ac Jx Qc 4s
both players check

(2 players - 4700 in pot)
River: Ac Jx Qc 4s 2d
both players check

Hero: shows KK
Vil4: mucks

Analysis:
Preflop: There's value in 3-bet pre, but hero decides to "slow play".
Flop: Hero decides that villain is likely cbetting often. Thus, hero decides to call 1, but probably not 2-3 streets of bets.
Turn: Hero continues playing properly in WAWB situation and pot controls.
River: A river bet is more likely a bluff than value, so hero decides to check.

Additionally: Hero determines that this player is likely a cbet/fold player and hero can likely float player IP.

---------------
Level 8 - Blinds/Antes: 250/500/50

Hero dealt in SB: KQo

Preflop:

Vil4 (HJ/20k): raises to 1500

Turn: Ax Kc Tc Ax 2x

Flop: 6s 5s 4x

Analysis:
Preflop: The raise size seemed ok at 250/500/50 as hero would like to get players to call.
Flop: This is a likely bet/call.

---------------
Second Entry - Second Table Reads:

IIRC, Hero gets moved to new table but only briefly. Hero has no reads.

Hero's stack is 16075.

Hero also 3b a random with As 7s and villain folded immediately.
Hero is moved quickly to another table.

Level 9 - Blinds/Antes: 300/600/75
Hero dealt in UTG+3: 77

Preflop:
Vil4 (UTG+2): raises to 1500
Hero: calls
(other players fold)

(2 players - 4575 in pot)
Flop: Qs 8c 4d
Vil4: bets 1600
Hero: calls

(2 players - 7775 in pot)
Turn: Qs 8c 4d 9s
Vil4: checks
Hero: bets 2700
Vil4: raises to 7k
Hero: thinks for a while, then folds
Vil4: flashes 44

Analysis:
Preflop: standard
Flop: Hero decides to float since villain may be cbetting with air.
Turn: Hero's bet may not have been that great. The line might be better to double barrel turn/river based on hero's bet size as villain can't really call 8x-JJ given multiple pressure on turn.
While there's a bunch of overs on the river, hero can check/decide IP on river and keep pot small.

---------------
Hero dealt in SB: QTo

Preflop:
(folds to hero in SB)
Hero (15k): raises to 1500
Vil6 (40k): calls

(2 players - 3675 in pot)
Flop: Ax 9x 4x (rainbow)
Hero: bets 2100
Vil6: raises to 5000
Hero: thinks for a while, then folds.

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero's ahead of random hand. Raise size could have been 1100 though to keep pot small/give better price on "steal".
Flop: Since villain just saw hero lose a big pot 5 hands earlier, hero might be perceived as weak-tight.
Villain's small raise on flop is a little suspicious (although normal sized given that it's easier to toss a single denomination chip). Regardless, hero decides to fold and conserve stack.

---------------
Hero's stack: 9k

Hero dealt on button: Ac 7c

Preflop:
Hero: raises to 1500
Vil7 (30k): calls

(2 players - 3975 in pot)
Flop: Jx 5x Jx (rainbow)
Vil7: donks 3k
Hero: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: With M = 6 | 15BB, this should have been an open shove.
Hero decides to play conservative and see if villains are paying attention to stack sizes. This backfired on villain flop donk bet.

---------------
Level 10 - Blinds/Antes: 400/800/100
Hero's stack: 7200

Hero gets walk in BB, then folds SB.
Hero's stack: 7900

SB: shows AA

Board: TT384r

Analysis:
Preflop: standard with 10BBs.

Hero out around ~120 in this flight.

---------------
Analysis:
The field was extremely soft. Many players were open limping even at higher levels.
There were 1930 entries over 3 flights of multi/re-entry across all flights. For a $365 buyin, $91k for first! (~250x ROI)

5-10 LO8 at WinStar Casino

5/10 LO8 at WinStar
Hero drove in and played a quick session at 5:00AM before going back to room. Unfortunately, the 1-2 PLO/PLO8 mix did not run this day, but normally runs.

Hero against "loose" SB
Hero dealt in CO: AQ65 two diamonds (Q5 suited?)

SB: calls

Turn: 8c 4c 8d 6d
SB: checks
Hero: checks

River: 8c 4c 8d 6d Js
SB: bets
Hero: calls

SB: shows A2xx (no pair)
Hero: has pair of 6s
chopped pot

Analysis:
Preflop: This was admittedly loose. Hero had played tight (1 VPIP in 6 handed rotation), so it did get respect that hero suspected.
Flop: Hero didn't really have reads. This seemed ok to try to cbet, but maybe it's too loose b/c villains are not folding any low draws, etc...
Turn: This seemed a bit best to check back. Hero's hand strength decreased.
River: Hero calls with 2 pair and this might have been a leak. Ranges are super wide in CO/BB battle, so maybe this is ok.

2-5 PLO and 1-2 PLO8 at Choctaw Durant

Hero raised in MP (iso limper) - KK97 ds to KK
Flop: 862 two tone (hero has both flush draws)
Hero gets c/r and all in against naked 88xx

Boards: Tx Qh
Boards: Ax 4x
Hero gets normal flush draw - T Qh
Hero doesn't get 2nd board - Ax 4x

Analysis:
Flop: This seemed pretty normal even in MW pot with both 2nd nut flush draws.

---------------
1/2 PLO8 (100 min, 70% of max stack, so approximately ~$1200). Hero sat with maximum amount.
Hero briefly switched to the 1-2 w/ 5 Bring In PLO8 game before leaving.

Hero was also fortunate to be in his first ever splash pot. $99 was added to 1 pot preflop. Hero did not win the hand.

Villains seemed to play tight/straightforward, although many were relatively competent (albeit loose home game feel).

Preflop:
Hero dealt in UTG+1: Ah Kd 8s 3s

Preflop:
(1 player limps)
Hero: limps
Vil6: limps
Vil8 (SB): checks
Vil9 (BB): checks

Vil8 (SB): calls
Hero flats

(3 players - ~100 in pot)
Turn: Qx 7h 2h 6h
check
hero bets 100
both players fold

Analysis:
Flop: Hero was planning to semi-bluff a heart. Normally, this is a check/fold if villains are more loose passive post-flop
Turn: Naked ace donk bet bluff with nut low - seemed decent, although hero might have been able to c/r 1 player or the field.

Analysis:
Prefelop: Hero could reraise OOP, but hero decides to play small pot.
Flop/Turn: Hero has board crushed with top boat. The right play is to check/raise (hoping villain overplays JJxx or AKxx) if any villains bet.
River: Players seemed weak enough that hero could venture a small "value bet" to make it look like a steal.

Flop: Jx 7s 3x (hero has BDFD)
Hero: bets 575

Analysis:
Preflop: This may be slightly weak to raise UTG+1.
Flop: Hero had been playing TAGish up to this point. This is actually a dry enough board to cbet with intention of firing a gutshot or back door nut flush draw on turn.

(2 players - 6525 in pot)
River: Ax 7h 3h 5s 9s
Vil2: bets pot (all in)
Hero: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: This seemed ok to try to play a multi-way pot. Hero was not really sure of preflop fold equity.
Flop: This is standard. Hero has super strong hand.
Turn: Villain's donking range is "I hit gutshot, I need to bet for value". Villain could have picked up set, etc... Hero does not think there is fold equity, so hero calls. Looking back at the shallow structure, it might have been more prudent to go all in and just re-enter.
River: Hero bricked and top + 3rd pair is not strong given villain's donk betting range. Hero could hope for villain continuing semi-bluff into real bluff on river, but hero really did not have read to believe this would work.

Analysis:
Flop: This seemed ok, although check back works too. It's a big metagame puzzle as people's ranges are completely polarized.
Turn: Same as flop.
River: Hero does not remember exact context. Villains seemed to be more NLHE players taking shots. A triple barrel and/or c/c river seems a little spewy w/o reads.

Analysis:
Preflop: This seemed like best play to try to get as much money in the middle.
Flop: This seemed like a weird spot. Villain made the right play with such small bet that hero is forced to call or not, but is it standard to bet in this spot?
With hero's stack size, is this a "hero is too short even though MW to fold"? Villain's range is suspicious for that particular bet size.

Hero re-entered at level 6.

Starting stack: 5000
Blinds: 200/400

Table was being played 6-7 handed with ~19 runners.
One of the other players was trying to figure out over/under with hero and came up with 17 at end of late registration.

This other player (seated at 3rd table to hero's right) was correct with 17 runners.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard open raise with strong DS hand.
Flop: Hero has 3 overs to board. Hero's equity is decent as long as villain doesn't have set. Even with villain's top 2 pair hand, hero has 3 live overs.
Nothing can really change in this spot. This is a normal play for both players.

---------------
Hero out in 15th of 63 entries. The field seemed soft, but hero was unable to capitalize. Hero played decently.
After 6 levels at 30 min. blinds with blind level ending at 200/400, hero is not surprised only 17 players remained. There were some double barrels, but many others went to play the $150 NLHE MTT or cash games after firing 1 barrel.
Hero did not have to fire 2nd barrel, but hero decided to be like on Merge and try to squeak into the money or better (like on merge).

Vil1 (BB): raises to 2600

Hero complains to dealer.
Dealer says that's what happened...
Hero doesn't know/why it was subconscious. But it was definitely a tilt problem at this point,.
Hero started complaining, and both dealer and player said it was explicitly a call.
Hero ends up folding...although hero did think about 3 betting in this spot.

Basically, hero may not be in as good of a mental state...

(2 players - 4400 in pot)
Flop: 876 two tone (hero has no flush draw).
Hero: bets 2800
Vil6: raises to 6000
Hero: thinks for a while, then folds

Analysis:
Preflop: This seems ok for an open against an unknown.
Flop: Hero cbets (standard), but hero doesn't know what to do against a small raise by villain.
Lots of turn/river cards are bad.
It's slightly bigger than min raise, which seems to indicate a big hand more often than not. It's less likely it's an info probe bet ("see where villain is at").

Sigh, w/o a hero/villain dynamic, it seems best to just fold here, even thought it's kind of weak-tight.
Hero could call and try to play pot control the rest of the way.

Does hero raise/fold? It seems spewy too...

---------------
Hero raised on Button with hand, but folded when villain (Vil1) shows aggression after hero's cbet is called.

Vil6: shows TT

Board: Kc 3c 2x 9h Qd

Hero's stack: 39800

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero didn't want to turn hand faceup by 4betting. Hero decides to slowplay to keep rest of villain's range in.
Flop: There's no merit in donking or slowplaying. A check/raise is standard while hero's stack is < ~30k tbh.

---------------
Next hand:
Hero dealt in UTG: QQ (no clubs)

Preflop:
Hero: raises to 2000
Vil6: reraises all in to ~15k
(folds to hero)
Hero: calls

Vil6: shows AQo (no clubs)

Board: 2c 6c 9c Jh Kd

Hero's stack: ~60k

Analysis:
Preflop: Pretty standard. Hero's range for calling is probably wider to 88+/ATo+ because hero had been so active. If villain had ~30-40k and shoved, this is a call as well.

---------------
Hero dealt in SB: K2o

Preflop:
(folds to hero)
Hero (SB, ~60k): raises to 2000
Vil1 (BB, ~40k): calls

River: Ax Kx 5x 8h Jx(rainbow)
Hero: checks
Vil1: bets 7000
Hero: thinks/folds

Vil1: shows 5x

Analysis:
Preflop: This is fine for a wide opening range. Vil seemed a little calling station though, so maybe this isn't that good of a spot.
Flop: Hero decides to play pot control (to get to showdown) because few worse hands are calling.
Turn: Hero shows no aggression and villain decides to show aggression. Hero decides to call and theoretically call most river bets.
River: Hero planned and should call the river bet, but after thinking a while, hero folds.
This was a spew, TBH. Hero should be prepared to call 2 streets in this spot and expect to win often. But, hero decided to change his read...sigh.

---------------
Updated reads:
Vil1: Hero eventually realizes that Vil1 is definitely a station and doesn't seem to fold any pair. Vil1 also seems to stab at a lot of pots, but maybe it's any time villain has a pair. Villain seemed to limp sometimes/often
Vil2: seemed passive and didn't raise often preflop.
Vil3: seemed to be competent more modern player.
Vil4: is a nit
Vil6: also seemed like a nit

River: Kx Tx 7c 9c Kc
Hero: thinks for a bit, then checks
Vil1: bets 14500
Hero: folds

(bluffing hand)
Vil1: said they had 2 pair

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard to check in BB. Hero's not sure a preflop raise will work with calling station who limped.
Flop: Hero decided to check raise b/c villain was being aggressive and betting lots of flops (and had 1 folded to c/r).
Turn: Hero continues aggression in hopes of fold. Villain asks amount and calls, so bet size seemed decent (although probably ~7.5k works too).
River: Hero was planning to bluff (AI for a PSB, although maybe 15-20k was better). Hero should probably have actually bluffed, but decided to avoid the triple barrel.
How wide is villain's range? All pairs? draws? Because flop was rainbow, it's more unlikely villain had straight draw. So, this seemed like a bad spot to triple barrel regardless of river card. It's not a super scary card by process of hand analysis, but villain may not read well and maybe folds some of the time.

Hero's stack: 33000 @ 500/1000

---------------
Sadly, hero developed read that villain bet any pair, called with any draw over the next 2 rotations.

---------------
Blinds/Antes: 600/1200/200

all players check

(3 players - 12000 in pot)
River: Ks Qc Qd 2d Ks
Hero: bets 5000
Vil6: folds quickly
Vil2: calls

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard raise UTG.
Flop/Turn: Villains seemed very straight forward and passive. Hero decided to pot control rather than "turn hand into bluff" and not get called by much worse.
River: This may not have been a good bet as Hero's playing the board.
The 2 villains were pretty straight forward though, but hero's trying to fold out "non-Ax" hands to hopefully get fewer people to chop. Hero is getting value owned more often since there are probably more Ax hands.
This seemed like good spot to bluff, but at least 1 villain probably has an Ace so it may not have been as good of a spot. Sigh.
Hero could also try to bet more, but this seemed spewy at this point.

Blinds/Antes: 600/1200/200

Hero dealt in UTG+1: AJo

Preflop:
Vil4: folds
Hero: raises to 2600
(folds to Vil2 in SB)
Vil2: reraises to 12600
Hero: thinks/folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero estimated a 10% shoving range. Hero's stack is about 17BB (M = 7).
Hold'em Simulation ?
2,931,464,448 trials (Exhaustive)
Hand Equity Wins Ties
AJ 43.67% 1,135,768,272 288,641,644
10% 56.33% 1,507,054,532 288,641,644

Hero's calling 18400 to win (26400+18400) in pot = ~41%.

So, it's about 3% equity difference, assuming villain would shove strong hands (AA/KK) too. Sigh, this was probably a call.
Maybe it's closer with hero's edge against field and only splitting 2-3%...

---------------
Eventually, hero saw Vil4 reraise all in with 2s saying "this is the only way i know how to play".

Preflop:
(folds to hero in CO)
Hero: raises all in for 15700

Analysis:
Preflop: Pretty standard shove with 13BBs. Hero could try to raise small, but feels that Vil1 looks at pot odds first and is more likely to fold range to shove.

---------------
Hero dealt in SB: QTo

Preflop:
Vil1 (60k): limps

Preflop:
Vil4 asked after the hand if hero is shoving if he raises and Vil4 calls. Hero said "maybe".
After the hand, Vil4 said he didn't want to raise preflop and be forced to call a shove. It's a weird spot given stack sizes for Vil4 and hero's sort of tight image.

Hero's stack: 26.1k

Results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vQLKx9XlWNYZKJImR7VwoQTu4CfEFAIlMOOafT-awF0/edit#gid=929337438

The field was very soft, even for hero who doesn't play that much NLHE. There was some limping and people weren't 3betting very lightly (or at all).
Even with hero's B game, this was a profitable MTT. Unfortunately, a misplaced 2 barrel bluff (that should have been a 3 barrel, tbh) was hero's undoing.

---------------
Hero was playing fairly loose and maybe wreckless.
One of three examples: Hero c/c a raise with Tx 7x 3s 2s in CO against a tight player raise.

Being mixed in with standard plays, it looked like hero was typical loose live player.
(such as Hero limp/called a raise with Ah Jx 3x 2h, but folded to Kh 9c Kx flop in a multiway pot)

Analysis:
Flop: Hero decides to call with backdoor low cards.
Turn: Hero decides to try to make a semi-bluff since villain's showing consistent weakness.
River: Hero thought it would be weird to fold, so hero decides to make small raise.
If hero was to make a play at this pot, hero needs to probably say the word "pot" instead of this small raise or raised to ~5k?
(hero should have raised bigger....this was a spew).

(2 players - 19200 in pot)
River: Kh Ts 9s 8c Js
Vil2: bets 10000
Hero: tanks/folds

Vil2: Says she had KTxx with nut flush draw.

Analysis:
Preflop: Table was very loose/passive preflop. This is a bit loose, but hero decides to gamble and try to build up a stack.
Flop: Hero can see villains calling super wide (flush draws, 2p, etc...). It's a somewhat thin value bet, but it's mitigated by shallower stacks and re-entry.
Turn: The nuts didn't really change, but only low wraps are the only hands that changed. Hero continues to fire and build a pot.
River: Villain's donk bet screams strength. The flush draw likely hit, so hero decides to avoid re-entering in this spot when likely drawing dead.

---------------
Hero was not happy to not see a tournament clock (they were all out of sight) and because of poor planning, hero wasn't able to bust and re-enter since hero had less than 1/2 starting stack.

Hero's stack at end of re-entry period: 10,300 @ 300/600 blinds

River: Qc 9x 4c Ax Td
Vil2: doubles up

Analysis:
Hero can't really fold 2 pair here against villain's small (1/3 pot) donk bet (although villain's donk range is strong). Villain might be donking top pair only or worse...

(other players fold)

Vil6: shows K932x

Board: Kd 5d Jx Tx 2x (no flush draw)

Hero out.

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero limps with a not-great hand. Hero thinks he might be able to steal some pots on turns/rivers on some board run outs.
Flop: Hero is tilted and really shouldn't call even with "right price" given pot odds.

---------------
Hero out in 61st of 71 entries. Sadly, the field was very soft and hero's unhappy with overall mindset and play. There were some coolers, but it was frustrating.
Additionally, dealer was like "at least you tried" which made it even worse. Although given hero's fish call on the end, hero isn't really surprised.

WSOP 2014 Overall Thoughts

1. Hero took a ton of notes on structure sheets to "stay engaged". It felt very much like my online poker playing.
1A. 2-4 sheets keeping notes on other players (think of chopping paper in 2 or 4 and taking notes on actions)
1B. Taking notes on hero's hands/reflections for later review

2. Food comps! Hero got 8 * $10/off. Some floors were nice and gave a ton, especially 1 after sympathizing with hero's losing 2 "flop time rake" spots.

3A. Timed pot rake - based on max size
3B. "Flop pot rake" - first card of flop is A-9, that player in particular seat pays; if card is T-K, look at 2nd card, etc...
3C. Sadly, hero had to pay 2x in a row in 5-5 PLO with A on 1st card, TA on 2nd :(

4. Hero got a quick cash game session in on Sunday before flight.

5. Hero thought about playing the WSOP 8 game. But, hero decided to stick with MTT "budget" and was also not 100% mentally prepared.

6. Hero need to learn to sleep earlier to get to big bet MTTs on time. It was troublesome for all the small stakes MTTs.

7. Monster stack madness was way more than anyone expected. It was sad because it directly affected me (no SNGs the night before, little/no cash gaming). On a positive, it was great to rail a friend in the PPC.

8. Dealer's Choice is a great MTT. Once I plug some leaks in Badeucy/Badacey, I would feel more comfortable playing in this MTT.
9. It was great to catch up with many friends and am happy for friends’ accomplishments during the WSOP.

It took 1+ hours to finally get another PLO/Big O game going. There was a 1-2 w/ 5 BI PLO and Big O, but no other games (5/5 PLO, 5/5 Big O) were able to get off before hero's flight.

Ironically,  hero was talking to players about whether to play or go to airport with ~1.5 hours to go. Hero decided to get 1 rotation in.

Dealt to Hero in CO: KK97 K7d

Preflop:

Vil2 (BB): checks

Vil?: raises to 200
Hero: calls

Decision: run board 2x
Boards:
KJ5Q7 (three flush)
KJ5Q4 (2 flush only)

Hero runs it 2x and chops with flushing river and brick.
Villain shows ATxx with Ax diamonds

Analysis:
Preflop: Bad KKxx in MW pot is ok.
Flop: hero bets for value w/ top set + 2nd nut flush draw.
Turn: Hero decides to bet/call. Hero is still an equity favorite against a straight.

Hero dealt in BB: T987 (98 suited)

Preflop:
Button straddle to 10
Vil1: folds
Hero: raises to 30
Vil3 (~2.5k): raises to 100
(folds to hero)
Hero: calls

(2 players - ~205 in pot)
Flop: T82 r (hero has bdfd)
Hero: checks
Vil3: bets ~150
Hero: calls

Turn: T82J two tone (hero does not have flush draw)
Hero: bets all in
Vil3: calls

Vil3: "Do you have a straight?"
Hero: "Yes."
Vil3: "Pair the board" and shows JJxx.

River: T82J4 (no flush completes)

Analysis:
Preflop: Super strong hand and hits ton of flops even OOP. Hero could have 4-bet to rep AAxx, but decides to just play post flop.
Flop: Hero doesn't have to increase variance because villain likely never folds to check raise on flop with shorter relative effective stacks.
Turn: Hero needs to donk and not be tricky when straight completes without flush. Some/most players (correctly) will check back turn when wrap straight completes.

Vil6: bets 250
Hero: reraises all in (~850 remaining)
Vil6: calls

Vil6: shows 32xxx and missed nut flush draw.

Hero gets 3/4.

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero could probably open in LP or limp behind at passive table. The hand really needs an A on flop to do well.
Flop: This sets up to be a "flip" if villain has 32xxx with back door flush draw.
Turn: Hero continues to bet with likely a freerolling hand, even though hero has 3rd nut high on turn. Hero's concerned about flush draw completing.
River: There's enough worse hi hands with nut low (or even high hands w/o best low) that will call a raise.

6 1500 PLO cash
7 PLO cashes
8 unknown
9 Russian - unknown

---------------
Hero's stack upon restart at level 9:
15500 at 400/800 blinds.

Because of the monster stack, this tournament only played 8 levels instead of the standard 10 levels.

---------------
Day 2 table draws were posted by the time hero woke up. Hero researched all the players at the table.

Research Algorithm:
1. Hero looked at each player's Hendon Mob (and other live MTT database records) to assess their previous cashes.
A. Do they have any stud/8 cashes?
B. Do they have any mixed game cashes?
C. Do they have any WSOP cashes?
D. How much MTT winnings do they have?
[If they have no mixed game cashes, they could be overly aggressive. If they have no WSOP cashes, they might be trying to squeak into the money and be nitty at the bubble.]
2. Do they have a twitter account?
3. Do they have any online screennames to gather info about their style of play or online MTT/cash game records?

---------------
Within 2 hands of day 1 starting, the first table broke.
After consulting the floor, my table was next to break.

Button started on the 10 seat, so hero had to pay blinds.
After 5 hands, my table broke.

Hero didn't play any hands before table broke.

---------------
Day 2 Table 2 Reads:
1 young male
2 Bart Hanson
3 younger male in tanktop and glasses
4 guy in Aria poker shirt (likely David Bach)
5 younger male with LA Dodgers cap
6 old guy
7 old guy
8 Kevin - young Asian player
9 hero

---------------
Reads: Hero saw players 1-3 were active.
Hero had sat down for ~10 hands and hadn't played any hands at this time.

Blinds: 400/800

Preflop:
Hero dealt in HJ: Ah Ks Jh 2d

Hero: raises to 1700
(folds to seat 3)
Seat 3 asked for hero's stack size (hero obliges) before folding.
Vil4: folds

(2 players - 3800 in pot)
Turn: As 9s 5c 4d
Vil5: thinks for a couple seconds, then bets 2000
Hero: thinks for a while, then folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Min raise seems fine. Sometimes an early limp works too (depending on style of table/dynamics). A friend mentioned that early position players are now open-limping most of their ranges in MTTs.
Flop: Given how both hero and villain are short stacked (villain actually has fewer chips than hero), this probably should have been a bet/fold instead of check/reevaluate turn. It's not trying to be results oriented, but there's more fold equity if villain doesn't have axxx.
Turn: Unfortunately, hero can't continue hoping to get half with only a backdoor low and not much/any hope for high...

---------------
Analysis:

Hero dealt in BB: Ad Ks Td 9d

Preflop:
(1 fold)
Vil2 (UTG+2): limps

Vil8 (SB): calls
Hero (BB): checks

Vil8: folds

(2 players - 5400 in pot)
River: 3c 2h Js Qs 6h
Hero: thinks for a little bit, then checks
Vil2: bets ~5100
Hero: folds

Preflop: BB special. If hero was deeper, hero could call raise.
Flop: Easy check (hero has no equity)
Turn: Hero bluffs turn as semi-bluff. Unfortunately, seat 2 calls.
River: Hero could continue firing. But, villain has so few draws that missed (likely lows that completed), that hero's fold equity is slim/non-existent. Villain has a lot of combo hands. Hero could try to bet out a naked flush draw, but villain's UTG+2 range (since hero's impression was likely competent) was 2 way hands with a low.
Villain's bet is likely a 1 way hand "looking to buy a chop". Villain seemed to bet fairly large on turn/rivers to try to push people out in other hands.

---------------
Hero dealt on button: AQQ3 (Q3 suited in spades)

Hero had ~6600
Villain had ~8000.

Preflop:
(folds to seat 8)
Vil8: raises to ~2200
Hero: raises all in
folds to Vil8
Vil8: "Ok, I'll gamble. I call."

Vil8: shows Ad Kx Td 9x

(2 players - 14700 in pot - 1 player all in)
Board: A6659 (rainbow on flop; 2 flush for neither player on turn; no flush on river)

Analysis:
Preflop: This is pretty standard across the board. Villain can't really fold in this spot...

---------------
Hero out in 114. 54 pay.

---------------
Summary:
1. The field seemed soft overall. Two players (including Grinder) dusted off chips pretty quickly.
2. It was sad to have wasted time researching the Day 2 draw...
3. There wasn't enough time while sitting at table to try to look up players and research their tendencies. There was wifi, but hero stuck with trying to be focused at table actions.

Monster Stack Madness

Meanwhile, a friend swho busted the LO8/Stud8 went to register for the WSOP Monster Stack.
Registration was so booked for the 2nd flight, that my friend (and numerous others) were flighted to start later.
The hope for some was an earlier start (say 9:20), but eventually....almost everyone was told to start their flights at 10:40 PST and play 3 levels.

Unfortunately, every table was being used for monster stack MTT. Thus, no cash games and no PLO8 sngs :(.

On the positive side, hero got to meet a bunch of new people and friends, plus rail a friend who was in the Poker Player's Championship final table.

hero thought about going to Venetian to grind, but decided against it. They were running cash games (PLO8, Big O) and maybe it would have been smarter to at least visited the Venetian. It was weird b/c this was first time hero didn't visit Venetian.

Late Registration Table Reads (table 3, right by the TV):

7 older guy
8 middle aged guy (possibly with hat)

---------------
Hero arrived fairly late (as usual), but a little too late. After waiting 5 minutes for a seat to open, Hero started at the 400/800 limit (level 5). 18 bets is a little shallow, but definitely a playable stack.

---------------
LO8:
Hero dealt in MP: Ax 7d 3d 2x

Preflop:
2 players limp
Hero limps

Hero folds a high flop when facing bets.

Analysis:
Preflop: With a couple other players, this is an ok hand to peel in a MW pot (3+ wheel cards + counterfeit protection). Hero fit/folds on 2 high/3 high flop.

---------------
LO8:
New Reads: Vil1 annouced he's a fish in both games and was showing down/peeling light when drawing thin and getting half and/or scooping.

Hero dealt in UTG+1: Ax Ks 7x 2s

Preflop:
Vil1 (UTG): limps

(2 players - 4 big bets in pot)
Turn: Jc Ts 8c Td
Vil1: bets
Hero: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard isolation play against fish.
Flop: This is a bet/call HU. Villain's range screams 2p-set-straight given Seat 1's tendencies.
Turn: Sadly, this card hits a ton of Vil1's range. Hero could try to bluff-raise and river bet with a gutshot to try to bluff a straight, but boats are never folding.

Analysis:
Note: 6th street was a high card, but not sure if it was a T.
3rd: Hero's ahead of villain has low draw or underpair. Unfortunately, high hand comes along.
4th: Standard bet to knock out low that may have bricked with pair. But, there probably wasn't much fold equity in this spot because villain's a loose passive calling station.
5th: Hero should have continued to bet on 5th, tbh.
6th: Hero can't bet brick on 6th
7th: Hero thinks villain may be betting a naked low. In reality, this is a thin call b/c vil1 is rarely betting anything less than 2p in this spot (even if they're horrible). Hero could see villain value betting worse 6s-4s up, but it's only a little bit of villain's range. Given pot size, it's close. If pot had a big bet or 2, then it's a sigh-call.

Hero out around 98th.

Side notes:
One of the dealers was a floor I had met briefly in Chinook Winds!
She was making a conversation with person in seat 5 regarding Big O in Portland area.

As we were playing, eventually figured out that seat 1 was a huge fish in both games and admitted to it too!

Flop: Hero decided to check pot
Turn: Hero forgot to check villain's stack size. The raise size is scary (slightly larger than min raise). With villain's short stack and hero's 2nd bet, this could be an easy fold in a live game. Would villain raise a QTxx for value? Why so small?
River: Hero has blockers to hands, but does villain ever raise not boats here? Hero's boat is so low that this probably should be a fold on river.

---------------
On a negative note, hero had to pay time for table 2x based on "first card of flop - seat number corresponding to player pays time; if first card isn't a seat number, then 2nd (then 3rd) are used.

Unfortunately, hero doesn't remember exact preflop action. It was most likely a limped pot with 4 players.

(4 players - ~1350 in pot)
Flop: Qx 5h 4h

Vil?: checks
Hero: bets 1000

Vil?: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: This is somewhat loose without suited ace. A suited king can get hero in trouble as it's best to fold against nits showing aggression.
Flop: Hero could bet here with nut flush blocker + nld in a MW pot, but hero decides to check flop.
Turn: Hero decides to bluff with nut flush blocker.

Hero dealt in MP?: Ac Kc 5s 3s 2x

Hero: raises to 1k
3 players call
Vil1: calls

(5 players - 5k in pot)
Flop: Tc Tx 8c
Vil1: bets 2k
all players fold

Analysis:
Preflop: Suited a23 with low cards = standard isolation play. Multiway pot is fine too.
Flop: This could be a spot to peel w/ nfd + backdoor lows, but hero decides to show respect to a small flop bet into a field of people.

Hero: bets 6700

Vil2: shows QJ85x (2p/no low)

Analysis:
Preflop: This is ok to raise UTG with suited A43xx. A limp can work too.
Flop: Hero has bottom pair.
Turn: Hero doesn't have much for high in this spot and little fold equity to get villains to fold.
River: Hero rivers bad 2p + nut low and tries to bet to push off high hands + get called with worse A3xxx to get 3/4 of villain's bet.
Hero decides to bet a little less than pot.

300/600 blinds
Hero's stack: 11,400

About an orbit earlier - UTG+1 said that he's a nit.
This was about 15 hands into the table.

Hero: dealt Ax Kc 4c 3c 2x

Preflop:
UTG+1: raises to 2100
(folds to hero)
1 flat call
Hero: reraises to 8500
UTG+1: reraises all in
call: folds
Hero: calls

(2 players - 1 AI - ~23,700 in pot)
Board: Js 8d 4d 8h Qx

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero decides to squeeze. The comment could have actually swayed towards not squeezing.
Hero could easily try to play flop and flat call, but it's close with hero only having ~17BBs. Hero would have 1.5 SPR on flop.
Hero's equity isn't horrible shape against naked aces with 4 live low cards.

Hero out around 126th.

Hero talked briefly with a couple friends (C. F., L. F., etc...) before sprinting to the Rio to contemplate playing 8 game and/or playing 8 game SNGs.
