WSOP 1500 PLO8-LO8-Big O Mix at Rio

7500 starting chips at 50/100 limits (25/50 blinds in big bet games) and 60 min. levels. The structure was changed a couple days before the event.

---------------
First Table Reads (Table 387, back of room - left or middle table):

1 old guy, hero saw at various PLO8 MTTs
2 young guy with polo (eventually - new registrant - red haired young guy)
3 old guy with fleece
4 hero
5 (empty) (late registration - young euro with Scarf)
6 old guy with moustache and glasses
7 middle aged guy (seen at Dealer's Choice - Bryce Y.)

---------------
It was a pleasant surprise to everyone that it was 7 handed. Big O is usually played 8 handed.

Additionally, the structure was changed a couple days before the tournament (which has become normal for WSOP unfortunately).

Hero was running slightly late due to rain storm. It was first time this summer (and 4th time in hero's time in LV) that it was raining.
Unfortunately, hero bought in the night before and was blinded off somewhat.

River: Kx 8x 6x 6x 3x (rainbow)

Hero: bets 1500
Vil3: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard. Hero has a low wheel hand and would prefer to see a multiway pot.
Flop: Standard. Hero has bottom pair + uncounterfeitable low. Hero currently prefers to keep other players in pot.
Turn: Hero considers slowplaying and letting Vil3 continue to bet at pot. Hero likely has best hand.
River: Hero makes large value bet in hopes of getting called by worse. Would a smaller bet have worked? It's debatable and may not get as much value. If the bet is closer to 1/2 bet, Vil3 has to call even if getting quartered.

---------------
Hero's stack at Level 3 break (Limits: 150/300) - 12100

---------------
Vil7 (Bryce Y.) made a good point at some point in the tournament:
My goal is to build stack and apply lots of pressure. The goal is to get others to fold 1/2 the pot.

Analysis:
Preflop: A raise may have been better since hero has a strong hand and low counterfeit protection.
Flop: Standard.
Turn: Standard. Hero is getting a good enough price and closing action to go for half the pot.
River: Standard. Vil5 likely has an 8 or an overpair, both of which are better than villain. Vil5 may also be bluffing with a low draw and a better Axxx.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard.
Flop: Standard. Hero has top set, but it is on a 3 broadway board with a flush draw. Hero calls and hopes for board pair or low card.
Turn: Hero gets neither. Vil2 bets very small. It seems almost like Vil2 has a really low flush, a broadway straight, or air. Hero could continue, but hero has 1 villain acting behind. This is a close fold.

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a loose raise. Hero has middle run down.
Flop: Standard. Hero is semi-bluffing and hoping Vil7 folds a naked A3xx.
Turn: Standard. Hero can easily be freerolled in this spot.
River: This might have been a hero live misclick. Hero can raise/call. It would not be unheard of to be 3/4 in this spot, and Vil7 may bet/call with a set and no low.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard.

Turn: Standard. Hero has nut flush blocker, so hero is less concerned about a check raise with turned nut flush draw.
River: Standard. Hero sees little value in raising with 1 pair/nut low. Hero is chopping with 2p+ok low (or just 2 pair and non-nut low), hero may be three quartering some villains overplaying bad 1p and nut low, and hero may be getting quartered a smaller percentage of the time with 2p/nut low.

Analysis:
Preflop: This is a good hand to limp as it is not that strong.
Flop: Standard. Hero has middle pair and nut low draw while closing action.
Turn: This was a little bit non-standard, but hero is trying to generate fold equity in case of a brick river.

Best 2 of 3 matches

The draw party was pretty interesting too. Although draw party was at 12:30, Hero could have shown up as late as 12:45 and still made it for the majority of the picks and the start of matches at 1:00PM.
The TD got a copy of everyone's tournament receipts + those who were not there.
They were put in a hat and a nice bracket on a poster board was filled out.

Odd Numbered Rounds: Top of bracket gets the button in 1st and 3rd match.
Even Numbered Rounds: Bottom of bracket gets the button in 1st and 3rd match.

The picture shows a B in a circle to indicate which side of match gets button to start.

Some players sat in 1 and 4 seats, while others sat in the 3 & 6 seats.

---------------
Note: While many hands were played and it would have been great to have done a full hand for hand history, unfortunately hero was lazy and did not get a chance to do it to keep the match flowing :(
Maybe hero was embarassed, but it would have been great for documentation.

---------------
Read: called down with As Js Qx 5s, but unsure of board texture.

---------------
Reads and Game Flow:
There was very little folding on the button pre-flop.

There was a hand where hero gained a huge amount.

Hero was winning a lot of medium sized pots by mainly having large hands and trying to stay aggressive in spots where it might be a showdown.
Villain did seem to adjust pretty well, although both villain and hero were making mistakes in spots.

Villain's stack kept decreasing and was making some pre-flop reraises that hero was folding.

Turn: Hero tries to generate fold equity from broadway draws.
River: Hero decides to show down hand and sees little value betting unless Villain thinks hero is bluffing air by betting flop/turn/river.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard to open suited King on button in HU play.
Flop: Hero decides to check.
Turn: Hero decides to bet for value with 2 pair.
River: This is a pretty thin value bet. It is pretty close, but a fold is likely better. Hero could make it look like a bluffy line, but did hero's image match? Not really.

Villain comments that this is a check back.
Villain said he was surprised hero was trying to bet on river with "showdown value".
Villain continually said hero was a tough opponent. Hero said he was not expecting any easy matches during this tournament.

Flop: Hero flops a huge hand/redraw (lots of equity). Hero bets for value.
Turn: Nothing really changes (as no draws complete). Hero hopes to continue to get value, but Villain folds.

Level 4 - Blinds: 400/800

Hero dealt in Button: Ax Kx 9x 6x

Vil1 shows: Kx Kx 8x 6x

Board: Ax Qx 6x 9x Ax

Analysis:
Preflop: This could be a raise/call instead of raise/reraise. Hero is at best flipping or could be dominated. This may not have been best jam.

---------------
Game Flow Notes:
Vil1 seemed to 3b a couple times OOP. Hero's hands were too weak and he had to fold to a reraise.
Only once in round 2 was there a 3B OOP by hero.

Neither player was really able to turn momentum that started early on in any individual match.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard with strong holding and hero can have deception value.
Flop: This may have been a better spot to bet/call. Hero is not in awful shape and can hit top 2p/wrap, while folding to diamond turn cards (and/or possibly straight cards). This was probably a bad fold.

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard.
Flop: Standard to wait until the turn. Hero's hand is ok, but not great given board texture.
Turn: This may have been a bad spot to call all in. What hands is villain is bet/reraising that hero beats? Hero has worst boat, and big draws do not seem very likely for villain to try to generate fold equity. Neither hero nor villain were maniacs pushing big draws or being super aggressive.

---------------
Vil2 said Hero could not be read at all after the match and seemed genuinely friendly.

Hero eventually finds out that Player 2 won the whole thing (after agreeing to HU chop).

---------------
Summary:
The HU MTTs had a 1 on 1 conversation feel.
The first round winning 2 matches took about 1.5 hours, but we played 4 and 2 levels IIRC.
The 2nd round 3 match duel lasted about 1.5-2 hours too, IIRC (3/3/2 levels).

The staff and players were very nice with slowing down and patience for both players as matches continued.

Player 1 - from Pittsburgh, PA
Player 2 - plays in AC, was talking about mixed games too and was thinking about playing the WSOP Stud Hi event.

Also, hero tried to help the dealer reset stacks for the matches.
It was apparent that some dealers were not used to be a best of 3 HU format. Some were also reminded about HU/button in HU play and correct pot sized raises.

Hero did not cash as only 4 out of 32 places paid out (requiring wins in 3 matches).
Hero was fortunate to win first ever live HU match.

Vil4: hand is unknown (probably a straight) with worse low than hero's A3 low.
Hero: chops pot

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard.
Flop: Standard. Hero has 2nd nut low and a bad pair in MW pot. Hero does not likely have best hand in either direction and checks.
Turn: Same as flop.
River: Standard. Since hero is last person to act, there is a good possibility that hero will get half the pot a majority of the time.

Vil1: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard.
Flop: Hero has overpair, backdoor nut flush, and nut flush blocker. Hero could have bet or check/raised the field. Hero check/called because Vil7 was likely in the pot and hero wanted to get more money in the pot with a monster hand.
Turn: Hero is not sure if turn bet was best and/or if it was too large. The bet is likely ok to start getting money in pot. There did not seem like a guarantee that Vil7 would bet the turn. But, a 4000 bet would have been better to get more value, rather than trying to generate fold equity.

---------------
Hero's stack at Level 4 break (Blinds: 150/300) - 18275

There were many familiar faces in the field. It is a reminder that the field would be tough, and it would be normal considering the tournament buyin amount.

Analysis:

Flop: Kx 5x 4x
Vil1: bets 3300

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard to call first raise. For second raise, this may have been better to call and remain in pot. Hero's reasoning at time was that hero may not have best low draw, and it is basically a suited A3 (although with some counterfeit protection). Hero may have also been hesitant since it was a larger buyin to gamble in an early spot with little fold equity in a likely multiway pot OOP.

Analysis:
Preflop: Unknown, but likely standard. Hero forgot to write down hand again.
Flop: Standard. Hero was trying to value bet to avoid letting low draws complete on turn. Hero correctly believes Vil4's range has many nut flushes (or 2nd nut flushes).
Even if hero called, hero may be drawing only to half the pot without knowing if hero even has best high hand on turn/river bricks.

After hand, Vil4 mentioned he had big hand (probably non-nut flush), nut low draw)

Turn: This was probably a double barrel spot. Hero made the wrong play by deciding to check. (It does not likely hit either player, but hero is still PFR.)

4th Street: Hero takes betting lead, but this is possibly a spew. Hero bricks, but likely has best high hand. If Vil2 raised, hero could be at a huge equity disadvantage.
5th Street: Standard. Vil2 bricks and hero picks up strength. Hero's range looks like Kings Up (2 pair), while villain may have nothing more than a bad low draw.

5th Street: Debatable bet. Hero is trying to overrepresent hand, but this may not be great spot to lead. Vil1 will jam strong 6+/7+ draws correctly against hero.
6th Street: If hero bet 5th, hero bets 6th. If hero checked 5th, hero checks 6th.
7th Street: Since hero has shown aggression on every street, hero has to follow through to represent making a made hand better than an 8. Hero is fortunate that Vil1 folds.

Hero does not recall what other 2 players showed, but hero wins main pot

Hero's stack: 9200 -> 35700

Analysis:
3rd Street: Standard. Hero has some dead cards, so reraising is not ideal even in a cash game. Also, hero's stack is short, so hero needs to conserve bets.
4th Street: Hero could reasonably jam the pot here, but hero decides to not scare off villains and try to maximize profit.
5th Street: Hero correctly slow plays to avoid making it look like hero made a flush on 5th.
6th Street: Hero lets other villains bet and hero gets all in by river.
7th Street: Same as 6th street. The plan succeeds.

Vil1 wins pot.

Analysis:
3rd Street: Standard. Hero may have best low draw/combo draw as everyone has dead ace.
4th Street: Hero and Vil1's hand are dead. Hero is not necessarily wanting to put additional bets into pot. Vil4 is representing a high hand (buried pair).
5th Street: Hero expects best low draw (seat 1) to bet. Hero may not be ahead for either direction and may fold to a bet. When Vil1 checks behind, it looks like Vil1 has bricked low draw or pair.
6th Street: Vil1 donk bets equals strong high hand. Regardless of the action, hero is folding as hero is hoping to get 1/2 (and may not get half with worse low draw).

Hero's stack: 16k @ 2k/4k limits

Hero dealt in SB: Xx Xx (maybe 2 suited broadway cards - Qd Jd, less likely a small pocket pair like 66)

Vil6: folds

Analysis:
Preflop: Hero likely had 2 broadway cards or possibly a small pocket pair.
Flop: It is more likely hero's check/call = 2 over cards to board (and maybe a backdoor flush draw). Hero may have had a small pair and peeled getting large pot odds to hit a set.
Turn: Hero did not turn a draw and likely did not have a pair. Hero makes fold.

Vil7: checks (Vil7 may have bet)

Vil7: likely shows pair (or won without showdown if Vil7 checked.)
Hero: mucks

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard, although hero needs to also play well post-flop.
Flop: Standard. But, is this a double barrel spot?
Turn: Hero decides to check behind. Hero decides to give up on hand, but maybe this was a better spot to double barrel. It is tough because hero's stack is short. This may be why hero should have checked flop/bet turn.
River: Standard. There is little fold equity.

Vil4: shows Ax Kx Qx 3x

Analysis:
Preflop: Standard. Hero likely suspects there is 1 A dead, but hero has odds to call and play a flop.
Flop: This might be close enough to continue if HU. However, hero is OOP and a 3rd player in the hand indicates hero might be chasing 2nd/2nd hand. Hero folds.

Vil4 and Hero are both eliminated.

Analysis:
3rd Street: Standard. Hero sees many duplicated up cards, so hero's equity increases.
4th Street: Hero likely has best draw and continues to get money into pot.
5th Street: Hero may be behind with made 86 against possible wheel, but hero has very strong re-draw. There could be value in just letting Vil6 put in action though rather than forcing hero to "go all in".

---------------
Hero out in 53rd (first time hero is eliminated with another player at same time).

Analysis:
Hero needs to continue to improve in LHE.
Hero's LO8 play seemed ok. This was due to additional work in short handed and button/blind defense play. This is an aspect of hero's LO8 game that can improve.
Hero generally felt decent against most players razz play.
Hero felt out of place in some of the weird stud spots. It seemed pretty rare to be in spots with multiple dead door cards. Hero needs to remember that stud ranges are (buried pairs, overs) and not just split pairs in that spot.
Hero felt strongest in stud8.

Field seemed to be a higher percentage mix of stronger players. This seemed normal given that it is a higher buy in and also a "Golden Nugget" championship event. There did not seem to be anyone that was a complete fish.
