350 NLHE @ Venetian (Venetian Deep Stack Series)

Every entry nets you one of three things as a "comp"
1. VDS T-Shirt
2. VDS cap
3. $10 food comp

2 people wore ones from the previous VDS with NAPT and pokerstars patches. Those looked really nice.
Also, the back had a black "PokerStars" logo (with the spade) which looked really nice.
No other tournaments offered anything in terms of comps.

People who late registered are blinded off at a round per 15 min.
The "chips" are not removed from play. They are put back into each subsequent pot (1 sb at a time) for the late registrant (or others) to win.

--------------
starting stack:
12k
initial table (started 8 handed for late registrations)
seemed to be very tight

level 1

hero - dealt AKo
UTG (hero) - raises
2 folds
MP - calls
1 fold
button - reraises somewhat small
UTG - calls
MP - calls

flop:
Ah6c8d
3 checks

turn:
Ah6c8d4d
3 checks

river:
Ah6c8d4d7d
3 checks

Hero: shows AK (pair of aces)
MP: shows tens
LP: says he mucks KK (pair of kings)

Analysis:
Hero was hoping for a cbet from the initial raiser.
Turn could have been a value bet, but I'm not sure if anyone is calling.
River would allow only mean worser hands call.

-------------
level 2:
I raise in EP with 10s
one guy calls

ace high flop (dry board - no flush/straight draws)

checks the whole way to the river...
caller shows Kings

He says he remembered me not betting with big hand earlier and did not bet...
[I later saw him on day 1A at WSOP $10k main event].

--------------
level 3

I raise in MP with 55 (475 at 100/200)
everyone folds to BB who calls.

flop: Kd7d5d
bb: check
hero: bets ~2/3 pot
bb: calls

turn
Kd7d5dKh
bb: checks
hero: checks

river:
Kd7d5dKh5c
bb: checks
hero: bets 1/2 pot
bb: calls

Hero shows: 55 (quads)
villain mucks: AdJd (ace high flush)

Analysis:
I don't know if i'd jam my whole stack in on flop if i got raised. I think I might have check/called, as his range could include naked Ace of diamonds hands. Even though I'm not really happy to see any diamond on the turn. Considering stack sizes (40 bets each), it's a possibility to go either way.

pick up aces UTG
(6 folds)
sb calls
bb - shoves
hero: calls

aces hold

stack: 20.45k

-------------
level 4

2 callers
CO (25k): raises
hero (sb - 20k): calls with AdKd
BB: calls
original limpers: call

(5 players to flop)
flop:
Qd3x2d

4 checks
PFR cbets
hero: check raises pot
3 folds
PFR: calls

turn:
Qd3x2d8h

hero: shoves
PFR: folds

PFR says "You must have a set".

Analysis:
I was fortunate that a "dry board" actually was good to get the PFR to cbet.
The check-raise and subsequent shove on turn was standard, IMO.

-----------

UTG - raises
5 folds
hero (button) - reraises
sb/bb - fold
UTG - calls

flop:
KxKdTd

UTG: checks
hero: bets 2/3 pot
UTG: calls

turn:
KxKdTdAd
UTG: checks
hero: bets 2/3 pot
UTG: raises all in (about 1/2 pot sized bet)
hero: folds

Analysis:
At the time, I did not notice there was a raise in front of me, so when I said raise, it was actually a reraise.

When villain calls on a "somewhat dry board" after calling 3 bet, he likely hit the board. The double barrel by hero was very bad. Hero could "represent an ace", but people calling more than likely have a "K" in their range.

Villain told me (after he busted) that he had AK (which fits his action perfectly). He was hoping I had some sort of hand which is why he shoved.
At the time, I definitely was not going to fire a 3rd barrel on the river.

Hero lost 1/4 of stack on this 2nd bet...

---------
maniac with an overwhelming stack was moved to table
he just randomly did a lot of shoves all in (about 3 times pre and post flop)

I raise in early position with TT
2 callers
maniac shoves
(I said call, not noticing BB still had to act)
BB folds
hero insta-calls

Analysis:
With the amount of shoving from maniac, I did not put villain on a very strong range of hands (top 20%+)...

villain: AdTd
Hero: TT

Hero's tens hold up
doubles up through table "chip leader"

maniac begins to slow down (somewhat) after that

within 15 hands, I received 2 pairs of aces and short stacks overshoved all in (1.5 x pot size shove)
aces stay alive in both cases.

stack: 41k

------------
level 7

hero (EP): raises with AKo
folds to button
tight player on button - reraises to 4k (stack about 20k)
hero: shoves
button: calls
button: shows QQ

board:
Q9674

button: doubles up
Hero: down to 25k

Analysis:
Positives for 4-bet reraise shove
fold equity

Negatives for 4-bet reraise shove
Player had been playing tight (which was not really much of a factor in my original decision, unfortunately.) I am not sure how much fold equity I truly had.

Overall, I am pretty unhappy that I shoved here. Villain rarely folds, especially in live MTT when reraising. In retrospective, I don't think stacks are shallow enough to let me get away from it even if I check raised the flop or check/call flop -> shove any turn

level 8 - 21k

"poker pro" Scott Bruni (name may be misspelled)
he sat down about 2 rotations ago
MTT pro in EP - raises
I 3 bet with AA

Analysis: I should not have 3 betted. I may have gotten a c-bet out of most of his range on the flop. Most people (who know what they're doing) generally don't call 3 bets OOP very often...

--------
hero raises in EP with aces
short stack reshoves in LP
aces hold

a couple hands later
folds to hero in CO
Hero raises with TT
folds to BB
BB - shoves (pot sized bet)
hero: calls

BB - shows 77

board runs out: XXX7X
BB - doubles up
hero's stack up about 4k (M + 2) in chips over 5 hands

--------
level 8
tried to steal in MP with 87s (M = 7)
youngish person reraises me

I decide to fold and not gamble in this spot.

----------
end of level 10 (dinner break)
15.3k (blinds 800/1.6k/200 ante)
M = 4

--------
UTG - raises
7 folds
hero (sb): flat calls with KsQs
bb - folds

952 board
hero: shoves (pot sized bet)
UTG: calls
UTG: shows AsJs

board: 952Q7
hero doubles up and stays alive

A couple hands later

folds to hero in MP
hero: raises with TT
player behind me (larger stack) - shoves
hero: calls

board runs:
AKXXT

hero doubles up

Analysis:
Player behind me was still alive with a decent stack, as he seemed to be playing decently well.
Hero feels very bad about the situation.

5-10 hands later
hero picks up AK vs. 44 (shorter stack who shoved) in blinds
4s hold - double up short stack

5-10 hands later
hero picks up Tens
money gets all in preflop
hero flops top set and eliminates player

M = 9-10
-----
level 13

hero's stack: M = 9 (approx. 75k at 1.2k/2.4k/300)
raise in MP with 6d5d
BB (tight player) calls
flop: KQ9

BB: checks
hero: cbets
BB: raises all in
hero: folds

Analysis:
This is a very bad board to cbet against a tight, short stacked player. 3 paint cards usually indicates he has at least a part of the board

------
level 14

hero shoves AJ in MP
player directly behind (who has had 2-3 all ins with hero and others and was still alive) - reshoves
player directly behind - has shorter stack than hero

TT6JJ

hero sucks out and eliminates other player

player was mad at the cards and his "bad run of cards"...
hero did not feel too happy to eliminate player like that (he actually was hoping for chop when the flop was paired).

-------
hero passes up 1 marginal spot to steal approaching bubble

-------
bubble stories:
maniac
vs.
1 guy (huge chip stack) - says he's a "cash game player" who calls with Q9s/J8s against all in players (which is a decent strategy).

prior history with showing 5c on bad board (965 2 club board)

(each player had 180-200k in chips) at around level 15-17
raise
reraise
4 bet shove
snap call

board bricks for both players, and "maniac" is eliminated
cash game player - new chip leader: has about 380k chips in player

--------------
I stayed at the same initial table (table 100) until redraw after the money bubble bursted

5 hands at hand for hand
it took about 15 min. to go through

money bubble bursts around 12:30AM (12 hours after tourney started) around level 15

-------------
redraw at 63 players (7 9 handed tables)

first hand at new table (after hand for hand)

hero (M = 4) UTG
hero: shoves with AKo

button goes in tank, calls with AQo

hero's hand holds up and doubles up

80k chips (M = 7 @ 2.5k/5k/500)

seat 2 had been open raising about 5 times in 27 hands...

seat 2 (EP) - raises
hero (BB): picks up TT
hero: just calls

flop: AK7 rainbow
hero: check
2: check
Turn:
AK7J (2 flush)
hero: check
2: small bet
hero: folds

Analysis: Decided to mix up my play and not auto shove preflop.
With 3rd pair on the board, I was hoping to just get to showdown for free. When villain bets, hero is likely behind and folds.
(Villain later says he slowplayed AK (top 2 pair) on flop when I busted.)

(side comment)
seat 2 said a couple hands later - I like to see flops
I told the table - I like to see flops too!

-------
2 orbits later

hero's M = 5
seat 2 (EP) - raises
hero (BB) - picks up QQ
hero - decides to flat call

flop:
Jh9d2d
hero: checks
2: bets 1/2 pot
hero: calls

turn:
Jh9d2dTs
hero: autoshoves
2: asks me "did i hit a straight"
hero: says that "do you think i had Q8?"
(table talk was bad and he apologized immediately)
2: well, i have outs if I'm wrong - i call
hero: I definitely still have outs

2: shows 22 (set of deuces)
hero: shows QQ (overpair + open ended straight draw)

Jh9d2dTs5c

hero - eliminated

-----------------------
56/603
(min cash)
63 places paid

Overall, the field seemed to be a mix of players of varying skill levels...

350 -> 627
